I agree with you on that point but I don't see that its an enforcable rule.
Especially in those rare cases where you may be the only person who owns that particular one. | | | MtnMike | | | Last edited: by MtnMike |

Yeah, but if you're the only person who has it, it won't show up in anyone else's profile.

Good idea but not easy to impliment.
How about, only people who have had accepted contributions for that profile get to vote. So the 1st person to submit it obviously gets a vote. As does anyone to submits it before its been accepted I guess. Then afterwards, those people can vote, and if your changes are accepted, you get added to the list.

Users will receive email notifications that they have a new private message, and there is a yellow banner at the top of the site when you have unread private messages.
Your sent and received private messages are visible in the My Profiler page under (appropriately enough) 'Private Messages'. In this list you may also see whether the recipient has read your latest message.
Our private message design differs from some forum systems in that each message is actually an entire thread that you may converse back and forth within.

not quite. everytime a contribution is accepted they get added to the list of approved submitters for that profile. So the list of contributors grows over time.
When a new profile gets submitted, I'm sure lots of people send in the same thing. So most new profiles would have quite a few people already on the list.
Also, as the IVS people get the last say anyway, and we are just voting to help, they can accept any contribution even from non-authorised submitters if they like the changes (or no one has voted on it).

As said before, that's unenforceable. You can't personally divide yourself up in packages, speed along the Internet, step out of the other one's PC and check their possessions.
It is easily circumvented. Even if there was a check that the DVD must be in the Owned sub collection, not on Wish or Ordered. After all, just "Add" the title by name or UPC, and you're in on the vote. Whether you have it or actually not. And this already assumes you're voting from within DVD Profiler, not in your browser (or a browser subapplication started by profiler).. | | | Eric

I'm not sure why this would be difficult to implement. You would do the same thing that is done for contributions. When you select the "vote" function, it automatically opens the voting for the DVD you have selected in your list!
I do not believe anyone should be allowed to vote on a profile that they don't have the DVD in their hand!
I also disagree that only people who have contributed to a profile should be allowed to vote. On the rare occassion where I find a profile that doesn't need work, or only needs minor corrections, I don;t contribute. That should not preclude me from voting. | | | Hal

As long as we are on the same page, 3 votes will not be a problem for us. All we need to do is make a thread calling attention to a title and we will get our 3 fairly quickly.
I was going to suggest that as soon as someone reliable like you or Skip etc contributes any profiles you announce the list of profiles on these forums and we all bundle in and lock it (before any plebs can muck it up).
Does the lock have to be on a profile version in the database or can it be applied to what is waiting to be checked etc? | | | Paul |

However well intentioned, that would be just as foul as the abovementioned case where a idiot just tries the same with 3 bad buddies to secure a stupid upload (remember the porn problem!).
Now, that we have private messages since 50 minutes, did you notice the forum overview shows the currently signed in? Should give an idea on how soon the private message arrives. | | | Eric

| Posted: | | | | I'm confused. Can someone provide a plausible situation where someone would be voting on a disc they don't have? I have enough troubles trying to keep my own collection in order. I'm certainly not going to start seeking out other profiles to give my $.02 on.
As for the three votes, I'll bow to Dan's experience at this point. But I hope Ken programs it in such a way that it's easily modifiable if a problem arises. Already we can see Paul suggesting that when someone "reliable" posts an update, we all jump on it a request a lock. Who's to say we're the only ones to think of this? It would be very easy for someone less "reliable" to have his friends doing the same thing. Dan doesn't think this will happen, and I hope he's right. But Paul's message makes me nervous (not offense intended Paul ). | | | "the main database is protected by many fanatics who argue minutia over the rules hour after hour, day after day, year after year" - Cliff |
