Thanks Skip, this is good. I need to check one studio

Columbia Pictures, not Columbia--production company

Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment---distribution company

Is this correct?

Columbia is Columbia Pictures...the Distribution company gets a little tricky depending on the film...

Most are Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment but a few still carry the Columbia TriStar Home Video moniker...In my collection they would be Glory, Groundhog Day & Sleepless in Seattle.

Clarification...

All we see is "Studios." Now perhaps we need some guidance on whether we should stick to the studios that made the movie, and skip the studios that produced the DVDs.

Skip touched on this in his post:

Quote:
With any Studio it is possible to have more production Studios involved, such as Castle Rock Entertainment, Silver Screen Partners, etc. IF these are present use them in order of appearance on the Cover of preferably the film credits. If there are any spaces left over then enter DVD Distribution unit.

The field is called 'Studio'.  If there are more than 3, then they should be listed in the order they are listed in the opening/end credits or on the back of the DVD case.  If there is room, and ONLY if there is room, then DVD distribution company can be listed.

It has been suggested, and I agree, there should be more spaces in the Studio field and a separate field for DVD distributor.

Just a small correction the 'S' is capitalised in TriStar...verified this at the Sony Pictures (parent company) website.

Sorry, studio names are one of my pet peeves....

Mine too Unicus and Columbia is NOT acceptable, the reason I haven't done Columbia(Sony) yet is because they have SO MANY studios under their umbrella, even worse than Disney. But I will get to them.

My sole objection to this practice is that the DVD Distribution company is often what differentiates between two versions of the same title.  And, DVD Distributor is what is normally listed by software vendors.

By the way, if there are three producers or film distributors and The Criterion Collection is the DVD Distributor, would you leave them off?  (And assume that the contributor will list The Criterion Collection in the description field?  I thought the concensus was to use both. )

KDH:

In the case of Criterion, which I also have not gootten to yet, since we list Criterion in the Descriptor, in my opinion, that elevates the importance even higher of the Studios since it is essentially redundant, if there is room for it, by all means but IF there are three or more Studios involved then I would call it redundant and not include it in the Studio section.

I'm with Skip on this one...since it is already listed in the Description field, unless there is room, I would leave it out of the Studio field.

Kind of like having 2-Disc Collector's Edition as a descriptor then putting 2-disc set in the Features...just seems a little redundant.

Skip,

Excellent work and extremely helpful. However, what about releases in other territories? Obviously the production companies will be the same but the distribution companies often differ.

To give just two examples (chosen merely because they were on a shelf next to me):

Where Eagles Dare (321900-651868): distributed by Warner Home Video (UK) Ltd.

McVicar (050582-201802): distributed by Universal Studios (UK) Ltd.

Now, whilst the first of these is virtually the same as the US distribution company, the second one is quite different to its US equivalent (and is actually closer to one of your 'unacceptable' names).

This is a good point by Duckula. I am sure that these are not the only UK specific distribution companies, and also I am sure that the UK is not unique in having different distribution companies to USA.
