I have a growing appreciation for the 3-strip Technicolor films of the 1930's-1950's. I discovered Robert A. Harris' list of these films in one of his columns at The Digital Bits. He has graciously granted his permission to me to bring his data here. I hope this list will serve to help others who love these unique films...and would like to collect them on DVD.
This is a list of only those films which were photographed using the 3-strip film process and printed using the imbibition dye transfer process. Technicolor continues as a printing process; however, it's the combination of the photography method and the printing method that makes these films special.
It's an incomplete list. Feel free to post corrections. I would like to keep up with increased the font for those titles that are available on DVD. At this point, I've selected titles that either are now or have been in print in any region and in any quality.
We'll see how the list develops...
Each listing currently shows the film name, studio, and director of photography within groupings by year.

| | Posted: | | | | There is also an excellent supplement to 1938's Adventures of Robin Hood.. re: Documentary Glorious Technicolor (1998)
After I watched that documentary I made sure I included an important tag to mark what films I currently have on DVD that is shot in Technicolor..
Wanted to inquire as well, that I noticed there are animated films that say technicolor in their credits but are not listed in these fields.. Titles such as Dumbo and Pinocchio as well as many others that are vibrant in color but not listed in the reference lists ..
except for Flowers and Trees (1932) ... ??????? | | | | Terry | | | | Last edited: by widescreenforever |

I added Flowers and Trees to Mr. Harris' list as it is known to be the first 3-strip Technicolor film. I'm hoping that Leonard Maltin's Disney Films book will give me info on the others.
I believe that color animation veered away from 3-strip Technicolor earlier than live action, so more research is needed to see exactly which animated films should be listed.
I'm currently confused by credits that say "Photographed in Technicolor" and "Color by Technicolor". I had assumed that 'Photographed in' = 3-strip and 'Color by' = Printing only, but I've not found that to be consistent in film credits.
The Glorious Technicolor documentary on The Adventures of Robin Hood is excellent indeed. It's worth the purchase price on its own! | | | ...James

Thansk for posting this list. A lot of great movies that I now need to add to my Wish List.
BTW, 'Crash Dive' (1943) is out as a Fox War Classic. 'Return of Frank James' is a pre-order. 'Cheaper by the Dozen' (1950) is out. 'The Quiet Man' (1952) is out. 'What Price Glory?' (1952 is also a Fox War Classic. | | | Hal

Don't have the film nearby but according to IMDB it is Sadly, they messed up the dvd transfer. When the three matrixes are put together correctly, the cables on the alien ships should no longer be visible. But on the dvd, they are there in all their glory. Technicolor negatives are quite complicated to handle. If done correctly, you get wonderful colours, but a lot can go wrong during the transfer. | | | | | | | Last edited: by Peter von Frosta |

Exactly. For me the main selling point was the fact that in that documentary there is excellent looking footage (about 10 sec or so) of Ingrid Bergman's first colour screen tests in 1938. Not published on any other DVD as far as I know.
Not that I have anything against "The Adventures of Robin Hood"-main feature, either | | | Mika

That's why I haven't ordered and bought the '53 version yet, the same for The Quiet Man,, I need the Best transfer not mediocre.. ( I hate double dipping over the years.. ) I believe the 2002 Republic DVD of TQM is the best so far on the market on DVD, but facial tones still looks purple to me.. | | | | Terry |
