I have written a small tool to view DVD Profiler's Cast & Crew Data: Cast & Crew Viewer.
It's quite slow during searching (edit: not with the current version anymore), but it has a few nice features (I think):

- CROSS-LINKING capability: You can assign a "common name" (Alias) to any credit entry. If you want, for example, link all occurrences of "Courteney Cox" to the entries of "Courteney Cox Arquette" simply right click on one such occurrance in a cast list and enter "Courteney Cox Arquette". From now on, when you double-click on ""Courteney Cox Arquette" or "Courteney Cox", you will get all profiles with either name listed.
- Automatic download of headshots (thanks again to MadAcid for providing the necessary webspace)
- Episode-specific cast & crew using the data from my TV Cast & Crew Collecting Project
- during the update of the movie data, there is also a textfile written which lists all UPCs with titles of your collection.

From my TV Cast & Crew Project Thread:
Quote:
I have written a small experimental program to view the collected TV cast & crew data outside of DVD Profiler and this episode-specific. As this program is experimental, there must be a certain structure of the cast & crew data. The best way is to download the compilated data archive file from my site and unzip it.
There is even the possibility to list all the appearances of a specific actor. Just double-click an actor. After that all appearances are listed. If you double-click one of those, this episode is selected.
There is also the possibility to include your Profiler collection in the search. For this you have to export your collection to XML and then let the program process this file. The process divides the XML file into single files for each movie, cast and crew (put into a new sub-directory of the folder where the program resides).

By the way: The cross-linking data gets saved into a file called Alias.cfg.
It is possible to view it in a text editor.
In the German profiler forum, MadAcid has started a thread, where we collect data taken from this file.
If there is interest, we can do it also here. I will collect this data and will offer it in one single file on my homepage (updated regularly).

here a start:
Courteney Cox;Courteney Cox Arquette;
Matt Le Blanc;Matt LeBlanc;
Jennifer Aniston Arquette;Jennifer Aniston;
Lisa Kudrow Arquette;Lisa Kudrow;
Matt Le Blanc Arquette;Matt LeBlanc;
Matthew Perry Arquette;Matthew Perry;
Paul Mall;Paul Reubens;
Thomas F. Wilson;Tom Wilson;
Freddie Prinze Jr.;Freddie Prinze, Jr.;
Larry Fishburne;Laurence Fishburne;
John LaMotta;John La Motta;
Elliot Gould;Elliott Gould;

By the way: There is new version available with a few nice addition, mainly a Cross-Link Editor for an easier managing of crosslinks.

I found out that this program crashes when there are movie titles with the character [ ’ ] instead of an apostrophe [ ' ]. Once I got that taken care of, I discovered it's a pretty cool program.

How did you manage to find this as the cause without debugging? Was it the other script of mine that helped here?

In the Viewer I use MSXML2.6 because this one everybody should have on their machine. Maybe the newer versions can manage ´ ? But everything above version 3 I cannot assume to be present. Version 3 I use in my other scripts, but there you had also problems, so it seems it can't recognize ´

Strange, I tried it now. When I change a movie title and add an ´, I do not have any problems.

Oh, you had ’ not ´, I do not even have that one on my keyboard layout

I don't know how to debug. I used a very low tech method.

Here's what I did:

For the disc ID checker, I first updated my Windows script engine at your suggestion. I still got the error. So I tested a small database. That worked fine. So then I knew that my system could run your script but there was something wrong with my main collection. So I backed up my collection and restored it to the other database. Then I went through a process of elimination. I deleted my wish list. Still had the error (I realize now that your disc ID program wisely only looks at the owned collection). Then I started deleting chunks of my Owned list by letter. Fortunately, I started at the bottom and worked my way backwards. After I deleted the R's, my collection worked fine. So I restored all of the R's, deleted everything else, and proceeded to delete one profile at a time until I got the script to work. When I deleted The River's Edge, it worked. I restored The River's Edge, replaced the weird character with an apostrophe, and then it worked.

When I moved over to test the Cast and Crew Viewer, I still had the error. I interpreted this to mean that I had the weird character in one of the titles on my wish list. So I copied the weird character from The River's Edge and pasted into the filter and I discovered Casque d'or and Thieves' Highway to have the weird character. I replaced them with apostrophes...and success!

I must have inherited them from the main db.

I know what the problem is. It is not a matter of the MSXML version, but with Visual Basic itself. It doesn't recognize this character and then an error occurs, when a string containing this character is to be written.

Version 0.1.5:
- Allows to make an alias the common name.
- speeded up the start-up process

When you create Cross-Links for Actors in my Cast & Crew Viewer, it will be saved in a file called alias.cfg.
As I offered here and what we already do in the German Profiler forum is, that I will collect crosslinks (just post new ones here) and I will put them all into one file which I am updating on my website, so everyone can complete their crosslinks with other users' crosslinks.
